I was advised by people I love not to create this work of art. How can a person live through the events of the past four years, live in America while it is still a democracy and not make some comment on what has transpired? I could not do it. Art is not always about beauty. This work for me is a record, in my most permanent medium. I show with sadness how there have always been people in power who claim others are dangerous and need to be killed because they broke the law...because they are traitors or criminals. Violence has been used both as entertainment and distraction because of its deep-seated power in human nature.
The pattern on each side of the artwork is Roman. The “swastika” represented the four seasons in Roman culture. Native Americans also admired this symbol and used it to represent the whirlwind. I used this tile design to express how designs, language, and the choices humans make have consequences. The Romans, through overreach and greed of their leaders, eventually fell...their culture dissolved. This has happened in human history time and time again, all over the world. We don’t seem to be able to get any smarter. We burn it down, we start over and do it all again.
In the lower image, I show the hanging of Medicine Bottle and Little Six after they were kidnapped, drugged, and brought back to Minnesota for what was the largest mass execution in United States history, on December 26, 1862. Thirty-eight Dakota men were hanged on this day in front of a cheering crowd, condemned to death in connection with a series of attacks on settlers. It has been said they deserved to be hanged because they broke the law. They killed settlers who were taking over their land. Pushed from their territory and facing increasing hunger and hardship, the Dakota were punished for fighting back.
In the top image, I show the events of January 6th, 2021. I include everything that the people were doing and expressing on this awful day. I have tried to capture the chaos and division of the past years that culminated in an assault on American Democracy. I have also included Bernie Sanders as a symbol of hope for shared American values and priorities. His are not democratic or republican values. They are human values arrived at through living life. Bernie understands that people are essentially good and that they want to help others. And if there is any hope for us, we must resist the efforts of some to pit us against one another.
